Fall on the Farm

I love living on a farm...hobby farm?...zoo?! Whatever you want to call it.

I also love FALL! So here are some Fall farm photos (try saying that ten times quickly)!

A few of my Marans (the 's' is silent) chickens. They definitely have little personalities and they are kinda beautiful!

This hen is scoping me out. She wants to know if the camera is food...see that skepticism?

All of my roosters think they are tough stuff.

Here is my last little zucchini, she's been trying really hard to get big enough to eat!

Some of the mums from our front porch....

This is a stone face that Cory found somewhere in the yard.

We live in a beautiful place. Sometimes it is easy to forget that with our busy schedules and endless to-do lists, but it is always rewarding to go for a walk in the woods. The creek is one of my favorite spots. Its name is "Mayhew Creek", the namesake of our house!

I hope you enjoyed some of these photos! Sometimes it is difficult to put into words what I see, especially when everything is constantly changing! I'm just glad I could get some of these pictures before everything turns white with the snow that will undoubtedly be coming in the next month or so!

Fresh Eggs

My little chicken nuggets have begun laying! I suspect we have three or four that have begun the lay their first eggs; so small and perfect!

Raising chickens has been one of my favorite parts of farming. They are always entertaining and always seem so happy. I think they know some sort of secret about being zen and crazy simultaneously.

I'll be the first to admit that I talk to my chickens. They're really great listeners. Plus they provide us with eggs! What more could I ask for?

The eggs I'm getting now are all shades of brown, peach, cream, blue and green. It is so rewarding to witness the amazing array of color that is in nature. It reminds me that the green of summer is quickly fading into the crisp browns and golds of fall...I can't wait!

A Day on the Farm

Remember our little chicken Firefly?

Here is a picture from the last time you saw him

And here's what he looks like now...definitely a little-rooster!

We also got a new flock of  pekin ducks!

At one week:

At four weeks:

Reuben has been enjoying our nice warm weather!

Munch, munch, crunch....MOOO!

Look at that adorable face..he has the most magnificent eyelashes!

And Abby too!

I also brought home ten french black copper Marans chicklets (pronounced maren, the "s" is silent).
They will grow into gorgeous hens and roosters and lay GORGEOUS dark brown eggs. And when I say dark brown...I mean the color of chocolate.

Plus they have feathered feet, which is just adorable!

Speaking of eggs, here's one of my Henleys, who keep us well-stocked with delicious fresh eggs.

I'm learning that Spring is an exciting time on the farm! Exciting and super busy. We have been trying to take full advantage of the beautiful weather and sunshine, getting outside as much as possible.

More updates coming soon, so stay posted!
